Company of Heroes is an RTS (Real-Time Strategy) game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by THQ for Microsoft Windows and OS X. The game was released on September 12th, 2006 in North America and September 29th, 2006 in Europe.
Setting and Story
Company of Heroes is set during the World War II and has two playable factions. The goal of the game is for players to capture strategic resource areas scattered around the map, which can be used to build structures, train units and ultimately defeat their enemies.
In the single player mode campaign, you command two United States military units during the Battle of Normandy. Depending on the mission, the player controls either Fox Company of the 101st Airborn Division’s 506th PIR, or Able Company of the 29th Infantry Division’s 116th Infantry.
Company of Heroes Gameplay
One of the objectives of the game is for you to capture certain points on the map. The more of these strategic points you hold, the more resources you have. There are 3 resources a player can collect:
Manpower is necessary to produce units. Munitions allow you to upgrade squads or vehicles and use their special abilities. Fuel allows you to purchase heavy vehicles like tanks, build structures and take advantage of global upgrades.
Units can enter and occupy a civilian building on the map, effectively converting it into a field barracks. This allows the player to use the barracks to train new squads. Occupied buildings can be destroyed after taking heavy damage from enemy units or other attacks. However, civilian buildings cannot be repaired or reconstructed. In addition, both the Allied and German forces can construct garrisonable structures (Germans can build bunkers, and Allies can build a structure to house a .30 caliber machine gun).
Combat mechanics include units and squads controlled directly by the player, as well as activated support actions, such as bombardment or air support. Every unit type, either infantry or vehicle, has special abilities that can be unlocked and upgraded within certain structures. In addition to units which engage directly via line of sight combat, players can use their resources to build mortars and other long-range turrets which allow them to bombard enemy units without engaging with their own squads and vehicles.
Company of Heroes received widespread acclaim, and also winning awards for the best real-time strategy game of the year. In addition, the game received a “Silver” sales award from the
